How does Google rank pages?
This is a very basic not 100% accurate just to give you an idea how it works:
You need to remember that Google’s job is to bring the most relevant queries to its users. So when i user types “dogs food” into Google he’ll get the best results.
So how does Google rank pages and blogs?
1. First of all Google checks the content on your page:
* Whats written in your URL
* Whats written in the title tag and in the title itself (H1)
* Whats written in the content and most important in the first sentence, paragraph and the last paragraph.
* What are the alt tags on this page pics?
* What kind of out going links does this page have?
Now lets say that Google found 10k pages with the phrase “dogs food” in the url, title tag, title, content on page etc.
How does Google determine which page to rank first and which one to rank last?
From all those 10k pages Google checks which page got the most “votes” from the net, meaning which page has the most incoming link, pointing to it with the text Dogs food
Not all links were created even and thus a link from a very strong site like CNN will be worth more than a link from your blog and a link from a dog related site will be worth more than a link from a car dealer site for this phrase.
Google also checks the strength of the site that this page is on and whats the bounce rate of the page, meaning how many people from those who came in clicked the back button and went back to Google to search for another site.
Thats more or less the tip of the iceberg. If you want to know more, join the Seomoz pro membership by clicking here.
