Besides PPC, how do I get my site listed high in the search engines?

I have been reading about this wherever I can find something that looks credible. The first problem, of course is finding credible information! The second is that everything I read seems to contradict the last thing I read. Where can I find a good source for good information about this? I would love to hear some tips from other website owners as well.
